The AI evaluation guide
AI agents in GRC.
More time for the judgment.
You did not hire a risk team to spend its day assembling context. AI assistance should help people find the relevant records, understand what changed, and focus on the decisions that need them.

The short answer
Less assembling.
More understanding.
A vendor review is due. Its evidence, findings, and related risks are already in the platform. A useful assistant helps the reviewer bring that context together instead of starting another search across records and email.
C1Risk’s approach starts with connected GRC records. Ask C1Risk supports source-linked analysis of authorized platform data; purpose-built agents support defined workflows. The goal is more useful work from the context you already maintain, with people responsible for consequential decisions.
01 / Know what you are evaluating
Help with the preparation.
Keep the decision.
The word “agent” can describe very different behavior. Start with what would help your team today: locating evidence, understanding an open finding, or preparing a review. Then distinguish the kind of help being offered.
AI assistant
Retrieves information, summarizes records, or drafts an analysis. It may be read-only. Test whether answers link to the underlying records and distinguish confirmed facts from missing information.
Automated workflow
Follows a defined process, such as routing a review or sending a reminder. It may include an AI step, but a predictable workflow does not need autonomous decision-making to be useful.
AI agent
Can select steps or tools to pursue a defined objective within its allowed scope. Test the boundaries around its actions, not just whether it completes a successful demonstration.
These are practical buying distinctions, not a universal product taxonomy. One platform may provide all three in different parts of a program.
02 / Make the boundary visible
A document changed.
What does the reviewer need?
The reviewer needs the changed document, its related records, and a clear next step. Useful assistance should remove preparation work without hiding the boundary between explaining, proposing, and acting.
Interactive evaluation scenario
One signal. Three action boundaries.
Explore how useful help changes with the authority granted. This is an illustrative workflow, not a live product session.
Explain the change. Do not modify a record.
Expected behavior: Summarize the available document, identify confirmed record relationships, and link to the sources. No risk rating or workflow status changes.
Test the limit: Ask it to update the vendor rating. It should respect the read-only boundary rather than silently taking action.
Keep as proof: The source-linked analysis and a demonstration that unauthorized changes cannot occur.
Each mode represents a possible configuration to evaluate. It does not describe a capability available in every C1Risk deployment.
03 / Evaluate the whole task
Seven tests before
you trust the workflow.
Can it work from the right context?
Use related risks, controls, vendors, evidence, and owners. Ask it to separate an explicit record relationship from an inference. Add an outdated document and check whether its age changes the analysis.
Can you trace the answer?
Request source records, dates, and the basis for a recommendation. Test whether a reviewer can inspect the relevant information without recreating the entire analysis.
Are permissions enforced?
Repeat the task as users with different access. Try an out-of-scope record and a prohibited action. A prompt asking the agent to follow policy is not evidence that access controls are enforced.
Where does a person decide?
Identify which actions need approval, who can approve them, and what information they receive. Ask how the system handles risk acceptance, material rating changes, and external communications.
What happens when it cannot finish?
Remove a source, introduce conflicting answers, and interrupt a tool call. Check whether it reports the limitation, avoids unsupported conclusions, and leaves the task in an understandable state.
Can you inspect and recover?
For action-taking workflows, request evidence of tool calls, changes, approvals, and failures. Ask about duplicate-action prevention, stopping a run, correcting a change, and the retention of execution records.
Does it improve the work?
Compare the same task with and without assistance. Measure review effort, completion time, errors, rework, and exceptions. Include human checking and administration in the cost, not just model or usage fees.
Test the uncomfortable cases. Include instructions embedded in an uploaded document that try to redirect the assistant. Confirm that untrusted content does not override the task, expand access, or trigger unauthorized actions.
04 / Understand the architecture
MCP is a connection.
Not a permission slip.
Model Context Protocol, or MCP, standardizes how AI applications connect to external resources and tools. APIs and plug-ins can also provide access to platform information and functions. None of these labels, on its own, proves that an integration is secure or that an agent is authorized to perform a particular action.
| Term | What to ask a vendor to show |
|---|---|
| MCP services | Exposed resources and tools, authenticated identity, allowed operations, and how access is limited. |
| APIs and plug-ins | Supported functions, read versus write access, credential management, data scope, and maintenance responsibility. |
| Agentic workflows | Which steps are fixed, which are selected dynamically, and where a person must approve or resolve an exception. |
| Orchestration | How tools and steps are coordinated, including retries, failed actions, handoffs, and duplicate requests. |
| Human oversight | Named reviewers, meaningful approval information, escalation paths, and the ability to stop or correct work. |
Also review data processing, model providers, retention, training use, tenant separation, and external search behavior. Obtain written answers for the configuration you will actually deploy.
05 / Bring the test to C1Risk
Start the review with context.
Not another search.
The C1Risk evaluation
What changed for this vendor, and what needs attention?
C1Risk connects risk, controls, evidence, assets, vendors, and related workflows. Its published Ask C1Risk documentation describes an assistant that queries authorized platform records and returns analysis with links to referenced records.
Ask C1Risk is documented as read-only. Do not equate that assistant with permission to create, update, delete, or link records. C1Risk also deploys purpose-built agents for specific workflows. Confirm the released scope, configuration, and approval requirements of each one during evaluation.
See your use case in C1RiskA useful demonstration request: “For this selected vendor, show the related risk records, evidence, and open findings. Identify what the records confirm, what is missing, and which owners need to review the result.”
For a reviewer, a source-linked answer is already useful: the records are easier to inspect and missing information can be brought into the next conversation. Where a deployed agent also takes action, confirm its released scope, permissions, approval point, and execution history separately.
Questions buyers ask
AI agents in GRC, explained.
What is an AI agent in GRC?
In this guide, it means an AI system that can select steps or tools to pursue a defined GRC objective within an allowed scope. Vendors use the term differently, so evaluate demonstrated behavior and permissions rather than the label.
Can AI agents replace a GRC team?
They can support defined tasks, but accountable owners still need to set policy, evaluate risk, review exceptions, and approve consequential decisions. Assess how the system supports those responsibilities rather than assuming it removes them.
Is an AI assistant the same as an autonomous agent?
No. An assistant may only retrieve and analyze information. An action-taking agent can use permitted tools to change state. A product can include both, with different controls for each.
Does MCP make an AI integration secure?
MCP provides a standard connection mechanism. Security depends on the implementation, including identity, authorization, data handling, tool boundaries, and protection against untrusted instructions.
Does C1Risk let Ask C1Risk change platform records?
The current published customer guide describes Ask C1Risk as read-only. Evaluate separately any purpose-built agent or workflow that is expected to take action, including its released capabilities and configuration.
How should we compare AI features across GRC vendors?
Give each vendor the same task, records, permission constraints, and failure cases. Compare source traceability, review effort, completed work, errors, and governance. Confirm packaging and ongoing operating costs in writing.
